South Lake's annual Mile Challenge will take place on February 9, 2016. This is our second and final fundraiser of the year. Money raised through this event will be used immediately to continue funding programs and activities for the current school year. Our goal is for each child to try to raise at least $50, although we welcome donations of any amount; they are entirely voluntary. We look forward to a great event!
For more information, please read through this handout that went home with students.
The 29th annual Irvine Junior Games will take place on May 15th at Irvine High Stadium from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. All students in grades 4 through 8 who wish to participate must register online at by visiting IrvineJuniorGames.com or clicking here. The deadline to register is March 11, 2016. The Irvine Children’s Fund has made before and after school childcare scholarships a priority for low-income working families in Irvine. South Lake students can speak to Coach Abe for more information.
Girls Who Code
Thank you to Woodbridge High School's Girls Who Code club for providing an after school workshop to our students on beginning programming using MIT's software, Scratch. Students created, tested, and presented their works in progress while learning new skills!
A Visit from Dean Chemerinsky
Once again, the Dean and Distinguished Professior of the UCI School of Law, Erwin Chemerinsky, came to speak to our 8th graders regarding Constitutional law and to answer student questions regarding their personal rights. Dean Chemerinsky has been named as one of the 10 most influential lawyers in California and one of the top legal thinkers in the United States. We greatly appreciate that he took the time to talk with our students and share his knowledge and expertise. It is an amazing complement to our students' instructional unit on the Constitution.
Transition Years Open Enrollment
The Irvine Unified School District (IUSD) is fortunate to have outstanding schools serving high school students. Although each high school enrolls students primarily from their assigned attendance area, the district does have a Transition Years Open Enrollment policy. This policy provides the opportunity for parents who reside in the district to enroll their student in another IUSD high school outside of their attendance area based on space availability.
Students wishing to pursue Transition Years Open Enrollment must make a request during the open enrollment window which begins at 8 am on January 11, 2016 and closes at noon on February 26, 2016.
